Neighboring Outdoor Activities

Offering a vast array of activities and events, Logan is an amazing place to live or to simply visit. Additionally, just on the edges of Logan, lie a whole gamut of exciting places and things to do.

Logan Canyon

Drive east from Utah State University and you will discover a world class playground we familiarly know as Logan Canyon. The possibilities are limitless. First Dam at the mouth of the Canyon is a delightful place to picnic by the water, go canoeing, or simply enjoy feeding the ducks. From there we can either walk or ride a bike up the canyon on the river trail that goes from First Dam to Second Dam and even up to Third Dam (although biking gets a little tricky here). On either side of highway up the walls of the canyon are numerous trails beloved of local hikers; favorites include the Wind Cave hike and the Crimson Trail hike. If you aren’t hiking, you might be camping or fishing, either of which is available in plenty.

Further up the canyon, you can enjoy horseback-riding, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, and even skiing depending on the time of year. Just a half hour up the canyon and you will find Beaver Mountain Ski Resort. Affordable for the whole family and including runs for both the expert and the novice, Beaver is a pleasure for everyone. The homey lodge provides warmth and food. Rentals are a plenty and adjustments made happily. There is even a small store with reasonable prices for that one thing you happened to forget. Never skied or snowboarded before? This is the place for you with trained ski school teachers and a very helpful ski patrol. Utah does have the best snow on earth and Beaver has it all!

Hardware Ranch

South of Logan, up Blacksmith Fork Canyon, lies Hardware Ranch. A special treat during the holiday season, visitors can head up to Hardware Ranch for the uncommon experience of riding a sleigh or wagon among the massive herd of elk that winter there. Trained guides lead the way and provide illuminating information about the ranch, about the elk that reside there each year, and about how they care for the elk.

Hyrum Reservior

West of Hardware Ranch you will find another treasure, Hyrum State Park. Managed by the State Parks Service, Hyrum Reservoir and Dam offer camping and water activities. Depending on the time of year, you might find yourself kayaking or ice-fishing. There is also a lot of boating, water skiing, swimming, and picnicking throughout the summer. A small fee will get you into the park. Alternately, if you buy a year pass, you can use it for free entrance into nearly all Utah State Parks.

This is just a sampling of the neighboring outdoor activities available to you as you visit Logan. Each is a wonderful experience in themselves designed to wet you appetite for the many more adventures waiting for you.
